The Digital Priestess — Episode 34: According to Fate

“…Even so, I can’t accept this.”

Kenichi’s shoulders shook as he glared at the shrine maiden.
It wasn’t from tears.
It wasn’t from rage.
Just pure, overwhelming confusion.

“A world where I never existed is the ‘original state’?
Then why the hell was I even born into this world!?”

The shrine maiden didn’t flinch.
She simply answered, calm and mechanical:

“Your appearance in this world was a deviation in fate.”

“Deviation…?”

“Yes. Due to a ripple in the system,
you were born into this world despite not being meant to exist.”

Kenichi was at a loss for words.

(A deviation…?
You’re telling me… my whole life was just a glitch…?
)

He clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white.

“Then the reason I have to disappear…
it’s just because of that?”

The shrine maiden nodded.

“Because you existed, things that were meant to disappear remained.
The disruption caused others to vanish instead.”

“…So it’s my fault, isn’t it…?”

“Your existence distorted the future.”

Those words pierced him like a knife.

(Distorted the future…? Me…?)

Flashes of memory swirled in his mind—
His mother’s smile.
Tanaka’s jokes.
And someone else…
someone he still couldn’t remember.

Everything he’d lived,
everything he’d felt—

Was it all a mistake?

“…But I lived…!”

The words burst out of him.

He felt like the ground beneath him was falling away.

“I laughed… I struggled… I got angry…
I lived my life!
And you’re telling me that was just a ‘glitch’!?”

But the shrine maiden didn’t respond.

She showed no emotion.

“…That’s too cruel…”

Kenichi collapsed to his knees.
He didn’t cry.
He couldn’t.
It was a despair too deep for tears.

(A world without me is the correct world…)

The phrase looped endlessly in his mind.

“…So, if I disappear… that’s the price to fix the distortion, huh?”

“Yes.”

Her voice didn’t change, even once.

(I couldn’t press the choice before,
but maybe… I have no way out anymore.
)

Kenichi hung his head.
Then, from the depths of his soul,
he let out a question.

“…Then… if I disappear…
will everything really go back?”

The shrine maiden shifted her gaze ever so slightly.

“Everything will return according to fate.”

But to Kenichi…
it sounded like she wasn’t sure at all.
