Episode 39 — She Called Me From the Future
For a while,
no one spoke.
Only the candle flame
flickered softly in the dark.
Shūji let out a quiet breath.
“…That was a heavy one, old man.”
Seikichi said nothing.
He just kept his eyes on the flame.
Aoi shrank back a little.
“…So… we’re not supposed to answer
if someone calls our name?”
Sōma spoke calmly.
“That was in the mountains.”
“We’re not in the mountains now.”
Even so,
no one laughed.
The air was still heavy.
Then—
Miwa spoke, almost to herself.
“Speaking of names…”
Everyone’s eyes turned to her.
She kept looking at the candle as she continued.
“This is something I heard
from a close mom friend of mine.”
She paused for a moment.
“Have you ever…”
“…gotten a call from your own name?”
No one answered right away.
Shūji frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Miwa shrugged slightly.
“Exactly what it sounds like.”
“She said she got a call
from her own number.”
Aoi let out a small voice.
“…What?”
Sōma tilted his head.
“Probably just a phone glitch, right?”
Miwa shook her head.
“That’s what I thought at first, too.”
“But…”
The candle flame flickered.
Miwa lowered her voice.
“That call…”
“…when she answered—
it was her own voice.”
The flame swayed,
just a little.
The moment she answered,
it wasn’t like a voice came through right away.
At first—
there was only a faint
static noise.
Like a bad signal.
It felt like someone was there
on the other end,
but she couldn’t hear
a clear voice.
So she said,
just to check—
“Hello?”
There was a pause.
Then—
from deep within the static,
she felt something move.
A faint sound.
And then—
“…still…”
A small voice.
But at that moment,
she couldn’t tell
whose voice it was.
It was distant.
Mixed with noise.
She couldn’t even tell
if it was a man or a woman.
That’s when it started to feel wrong.
“Who is this?”
she asked.
But there was no answer.
Instead—
“…no…”
Another quiet voice.
When she heard that,
she felt something was off.
It sounded like a voice
she had heard before.
But she couldn’t place it.
Not yet.
So she said,
“Is this a wrong number?”
And right then—
the voice suddenly felt closer.
“…not that way.”
The moment she heard those words,
a chill ran down her spine.
Because the voice—
sounded very much
like her own.
Still—
at that point,
she only thought
it sounded similar.
There was no way
she believed it was actually her.
And before she could process it—
the call
cut off.
I paused for a moment.
The candle flame
flickered quietly.
“So yeah…”
I continued.
“She just thought
it was a weird wrong number at first.”
A brief silence.
“But then—”
“That call…”
“…came again.”
From the same number.
And once again—
her own name
appeared on the screen.
She stared at her phone
for a while.
The same number.
Her name again.
At that point—
she was honestly afraid
to answer.
But—
if it was the same voice again,
she felt like
she needed to be sure.
So slowly,
she pressed the call button.
When she held it to her ear—
this time,
there was almost no static.
Instead—
she heard a voice
right away.
“…listen…”
The moment she heard it,
she felt a chill
run through her.
Because it was—
her own voice.
But this time,
it was clearer
than before.
And then—
the voice continued.
“Not that way.”
“That path—”
It cut off there.
Then—
“…no…”
A small voice again.
She instinctively asked,
“What do you mean?”
“Who is this?”
But there was no answer.
Only—
“That’s not it.”
“Go back.”
Those same words,
repeated again and again.
It sounded like—
something was trying
to stop her.
At that point,
she started to get angry.
“Who are you?!”
“If this is a joke, stop it!”
The moment she said that—
the voice on the other end
whispered softly.
“…not yet…”
“…not yet…”
And then—
the call
cut off.
Right away,
she checked her phone.
To confirm the call.
But—
there was nothing.
No record.
No incoming call.
No call history.
Nothing at all.
Like the call
never happened.
For a moment,
she just stood there,
staring at the screen.
And then—
a thought crossed her mind.
What if—
that really was
her own voice?
But—
she shook it off.
There was no way.
So that night,
she went to bed
without thinking about it further.
But later that night—
her phone rang again.
And on the screen—
once again,
her own name
was there.
Even she—
hesitated to answer this time.
But—
after everything that had happened,
she felt like
she had to know.
So slowly,
she answered the call.
The moment she held it to her ear—
there was no static this time.
Only a voice—
right away.
“…listen…”
And again—
it was her own voice.
Clearer than before.
She couldn’t help but ask,
“Who is this?”
“What is this?”
Then—
the voice on the other end
spoke softly.
“…it’s already…”
A brief pause.
Then—
“It won’t change.”
She heard it—
clearly.
And once more—
“…it won’t change.”
The moment those words ended—
the call
cut off.
That—
was the last call.
I paused for a moment.
The candle flame
flickered quietly.
“And then—”
I said softly.
“…right after that—”
“She died in a car accident.”
When I heard
she had died in a car accident—
honestly,
all I felt was surprise.
“Seriously?”
That was about it.
But then—
later on,
a close mom friend of mine
told me this story.
When I heard it,
a chill ran down my spine.
Maybe—
that call
was her future self
trying to stop something.
Well…
that’s just my guess.
I said that,
and looked at the candle flame.
“But still…”
I paused.
“Even if that really was
a call from the future—”
“In the end…”
“…it couldn’t be changed.”
The flame
flickered softly.
“You know…”
I said quietly,
“maybe fate…”
“…can’t be changed.”
And then—
I gently blew on the flame.
—fuh.
One candle
went out.
