Episode 56 Location Shared With You
For a while, no one moved.
In the darkness, only that voice remained.
“…Yeah.”
A voice that had definitely come from nearby.
“…Did you hear that just now?”
Aoi’s small voice trembled slightly.
No one answered.
Shūji let out a quiet breath.
“Don’t think about it.”
“That kinda thing… the moment you start thinking about it, you’re already on that side.”
He shrugged after saying that.
“…Come on. Next.”
Miwa spoke up.
“Sōma, your turn.”
Sōma gave a short nod.
He lit the candles.
One.
Then another.
Five.
The flames returned.
The flickering light slowly revealed the outlines of the room again.
Even so, it still felt like something from the darkness remained.
“…This is about someone I know.”
Sōma began without pause.
“You know that phone feature that lets you find lost devices?”
“The one that shows locations.”
The flame swayed softly.
“One day, he suddenly got a notification from it.”
No one interrupted.
“It said: ‘Location shared with you.’”
“But the sender’s name wasn’t there.”
“The username field was blank.”
Sōma lowered his gaze slightly.
“At first, he thought somebody sent it by mistake.”
“When he opened the link, a map showed up.”
“His own location…”
“And another dot.”
“That dot was—”
“Just a little ahead of him.”
Aoi quietly swallowed.
“And after a while, another notification came.”
“This time, it looked more like directions.”
“Something like ‘Turn right ahead.’”
“They kept coming every five minutes or so.”
His voice remained calm.
“He thought it was creepy, so he ignored it.”
“That day, school ended like normal.”
“He tried taking his usual route home…”
“But the road was blocked by construction.”
Sōma let out a small breath.
“So he figured it was probably just coincidence.”
“And that was the end of it.”
He stared at one of the flames.
“But the next day, it came again.”
“Same time. Same kind of notification.”
“He ignored it again and took his usual route.”
“And then—”
“He crashed into a bicycle at a corner.”
The air in the room grew still.
“Neither of them got seriously hurt.”
“But the other guy was going pretty fast.”
“Apparently he couldn’t avoid it in time.”
Sōma gave a faint shrug.
“And that’s when he noticed.”
“The notification had come.”
“‘Turn left ahead.’”
The candle flame flickered.
“He ignored it and went straight instead.”
“And that happened.”
No one moved.
“That’s when he started wondering.”
“…Was it really just coincidence?”
Sōma slowly raised his eyes.
“So the third time…”
“He followed the notification.”
“Still half suspicious about it.”
“It took him through roads he’d never used before.”
“But nothing happened.”
“He got home safely.”
Sōma continued quietly.
“And later that night, he saw the news.”
His voice dropped slightly lower.
“There’d been an accident on the road he normally used.”
“A driver had fallen asleep at the wheel and crashed into a utility pole.”
Silence filled the room.
“If he’d taken his usual route…”
“…He might’ve gotten caught up in it.”
Sōma let out a quiet breath.
“And that’s when he started thinking…”
“…Maybe something was protecting him.”
“After that…”
Sōma continued while staring at one of the flames.
“He stopped ignoring the notifications.”
No one interrupted.
“At first, it was just a precaution.”
“He didn’t want something bad happening again.”
His voice remained calm.
“So at least on his way home…”
“He started following the directions.”
Sōma lowered his gaze slightly.
“And you know what?”
“Nothing strange happened.”
“He just got home normally.”
He gave a small shrug.
“If anything…”
“He usually got home faster than before.”
Aoi reacted quietly.
“Wait… so they were shortcuts?”
“Probably.”
Sōma answered shortly.
“They were probably just roads he’d never used before.”
He didn’t elaborate further.
“And after doing it a few times…”
“He slowly stopped thinking it was creepy.”
The candle flame flickered.
“At first he thought it was unsettling.”
“But eventually he was like…”
‘Well, it’s convenient, so whatever.’
Sōma spoke lightly.
“And after that, he just started using it normally.”
Silence settled over the room.
“The notifications kept coming.”
“About every five minutes.”
“‘Turn right ahead.’”
“‘Keep going straight.’”
“‘Turn left.’”
They came with the same steady rhythm.
“And every route actually existed.”
“It never led him anywhere strange.”
“He never ran into danger either.”
His voice lowered slightly.
“That’s why…”
“He trusted it even more.”
No one moved.
“Before long…”
“He started waiting for the notifications.”
Aoi quietly swallowed.
“If they didn’t come…”
“He felt uneasy.”
“He wouldn’t even know which way to go.”
Sōma continued quietly.
“He’d check his phone.”
“See if a notification had come.”
“And only move after looking at it.”
The flame swayed faintly.
“That’s how it became.”
Then—
“One day…”
“He suddenly realized something.”
His voice grew just slightly lower.
“These notifications…”
“They weren’t just coming on the way home anymore.”
No one moved.
“They came on the way to school too.”
“Even on his days off.”
“The moment he stepped outside…”
“They’d start appearing again.”
Sōma slowly raised his eyes.
“It stopped mattering where he was going.”
“The notifications just kept showing him roads.”
He spoke softly.
“And even then…”
“He didn’t stop.”
A quiet breath escaped him.
“…Honestly.”
“He probably couldn’t stop anymore.”
“And then…”
Sōma continued, still staring at the flame.
“One night, something changed.”
“He wasn’t even planning to go out.”
No one moved.
“He was just at home.”
“It was already late enough that he was basically getting ready for bed.”
The room remained silent.
“And that’s when it started.”
“The notifications suddenly began going off.”
The flame flickered.
“Not just once.”
“Over and over.”
“Almost nonstop.”
His voice stayed calm.
“‘Location updated.’”
Aoi quietly swallowed.
“When he opened it, it was the usual screen.”
“His own location…”
“And that other dot.”
“That dot was—”
“Still a little ahead of him.”
No one moved.
“And every time the location updated…”
“The dot moved a little farther.”
“Like it was heading somewhere.”
Sōma continued quietly.
“At first, he ignored it.”
“It had nothing to do with him.”
He spoke shortly.
“But it wouldn’t stop.”
“The notifications just kept coming.”
“And every time he checked…”
“The location had changed again.”
The flame swayed softly.
“And while he kept looking at it…”
“He started getting curious.”
“…Before he realized it, he was already outside.”
No one moved.
“He said he didn’t even know why he went out.”
Sōma let out a small breath.
“He put on his shoes.”
“Grabbed his phone.”
“And started walking toward the dot.”
The silence deepened.
“He passed through the neighborhood.”
“The streetlights gradually disappeared.”
“And before long…”
“He was on a road he’d never seen before.”
The air in the room grew heavier.
“But he didn’t stop.”
“The dot stayed slightly ahead of him.”
“And every time he got closer…”
“It moved a little farther away again.”
His voice remained steady.
“The distance never changed.”
“It stayed exactly the same.”
Aoi quietly inhaled.
“And after walking even farther…”
“The road stopped being paved.”
“It turned into gravel.”
“And beyond that…”
“It was basically the middle of the mountains.”
Sōma spoke softly.
“That’s when he finally started thinking…”
‘…Where the hell am I going?’
No one moved.
“He stopped walking.”
“But when he looked around…”
“It was completely dark.”
“There wasn’t a single sign of anyone else.”
Silence filled the room.
“But then…”
Sōma continued.
“He looked at the screen again.”
“And the location updated once more.”
“The dot was still ahead of him.”
The flame flickered.
“…And in the end…”
“He started walking again.”
Calmly.
“After a while…”
“The updates suddenly stopped.”
Quietly.
“The dot that had been moving the whole time…”
“Stopped completely.”
Silence.
“And that’s when he noticed what was at his feet.”
Sōma spoke softly.
“The ground…”
“He said it looked like someone had dug it up.”
“And then…”
Sōma continued without taking his eyes off the flame.
“At first, he thought it was just dirt.”
No one moved.
“It was only slightly raised.”
“And since it was out in the mountains…”
“He figured stuff like that just happens sometimes.”
His voice remained calm.
“But something about it bothered him.”
“So he turned on his phone’s flashlight and got closer.”
The room stayed silent.
“And then…”
His voice lowered slightly.
“He saw something glowing from inside.”
Aoi quietly swallowed.
“It was coming from between the dirt.”
“He could see part of a screen sticking out.”
No one moved.
“It was a smartphone.”
He spoke shortly.
“It was covered in mud.”
“About half of it was buried.”
The candle flame flickered.
“So he dug it out.”
“And the moment he picked it up…”
Sōma continued quietly.
“The light went out.”
Silence.
“The screen stayed dark after that.”
“It was cracked.”
“And it wouldn’t even turn on.”
No one moved.
“He said that’s when he started thinking something was wrong.”
Sōma let out a quiet breath.
“But even then…”
“He still wasn’t fully thinking about what it meant.”
The silence deepened.
“…And then.”
Sōma lowered his voice slightly.
“That’s when he noticed the smell.”
No one moved.
“It was coming from beneath the dirt.”
“He said it smelled damp…”
“And wrong.”
Aoi stopped breathing for a second.
“And the moment he smelled it…”
“He couldn’t stop himself from imagining it.”
Slowly.
“What might be buried underneath.”
Silence filled the room.
“…So.”
Sōma spoke briefly.
“He called the police.”
The flame swayed softly.
“He explained where he was.”
“Told them what he found.”
“And waited for them to arrive.”
His voice stayed calm.
“And when they got there…”
“He tried showing them his phone.”
No one moved.
“The location screen.”
“The one that had been there just moments before.”
The room remained silent.
“…But.”
Sōma slowly raised his eyes.
“There was nothing.”
Silence.
“No notifications.”
“No history.”
“No shared location.”
“All of it was gone.”
No one moved.
“It looked like nothing had ever happened in the first place.”
The flame flickered again.
“So of course…”
“He got suspected.”
Sōma spoke shortly.
“He tried explaining it.”
“But he had no proof.”
“The phone was just buried there.”
The room stayed still.
“They asked why he was out there.”
“How he found the place.”
He gave a small shrug.
“They questioned him about all kinds of things.”
Calmly.
“But in the end…”
“They found nothing.”
“He had no connection to the owner of the phone.”
“And there was nothing left in his records either.”
The candle flame swayed.
“So eventually, they let him go.”
“He went home.”
“And his parents got furious at him.”
Sōma spoke softly.
“They told him not to wander around outside at night.”
No one moved.
“And then, later on…”
Sōma continued quietly.
“It showed up on the news.”
His voice remained low.
“They found a body…”
“In that exact spot.”
“And after that…”
Sōma continued quietly.
“The police contacted him again a few times.”
No one moved.
“They asked about the victim’s identity.”
“How he found the place.”
“Stuff like that.”
The candle flame flickered softly.
“And that’s when he learned something.”
“About the phone they found.”
Sōma spoke briefly.
“It had already been broken for a long time.”
Silence filled the room.
“Water had gotten inside it.”
“They said there was no way it could’ve even powered on.”
No one interrupted.
“And yet…”
His voice lowered slightly.
“The notifications still reached him.”
The flame swayed.
“The shared location.”
“The alerts.”
“All of it.”
Silence.
“No one knows why.”
Sōma’s voice remained calm.
“Maybe he just happened to be nearby.”
“Or maybe, somehow…”
“Something connected.”
He gave a small shrug.
“You know how it is sometimes.”
“When things just kinda line up.”
Sōma narrowed his eyes slightly.
“Like wavelengths matching up or something.”
No one moved.
“Well…”
He spoke lightly.
“That guy…”
Sōma paused for a moment.
“He laughed and said…”
‘It was pretty useful, though.’
The room fell silent.
No one reacted right away.
Only the candle flame continued to sway.
“…And ever since then.”
Sōma quietly added one last thing.
“He never got another notification again.”
He let out a small breath.
After that, he said nothing more.
He simply stared at the candle in front of him—
—and then, softly—
fuu.
He blew out the flame.
The fire trembled.
For just a moment, it almost seemed reluctant to disappear—
before quietly going out.
A thin stream of white smoke rose into the darkness.
And then—
—piroon.
A small sound.
A completely out-of-place electronic notification.
No one moved.
The smartphone resting in front of Sōma…
Lit up for just a brief second.
No one had touched it.
No one spoke.
And just like that—
as though waiting for the next story to begin—
the quiet darkness slowly filled the room once more.
