The Digital Priestess — Episode 30: There Will Be No Trace
“If I disappear… what happens to me?”
Kenichi’s voice trembled.
The air around him grew slightly colder.
Even the distant bells and the whispering voices fell silent for a moment—
as if the world itself was holding its breath.
The shrine maiden stood before the torii gate,
still smiling,
still staring directly at him.
“…Answer me.”
Kenichi took a step closer,
his voice trembling with fear and anger.
“If I choose to ‘restore everything’… I’ll disappear, right?
But does that mean I die? Or is it something else—?”
The shrine maiden blinked slowly.
Then, with the cadence of a ritual, she finally spoke:
“You will become something that never existed.”
“…What?”
The words didn’t hit his ears.
They pierced straight into his mind.
“‘Never existed’? What the hell does that mean…?”
“It means you will have never existed.
Not in memories.
Not in records.
Not even as a trace.”
Her tone was calm.
Too calm.
That’s what made it unbearable.
“…That’s worse than dying…”
Kenichi’s voice was faint.
The terror he felt in this place…
It kept reaching new depths.
To “disappear” wasn’t to die.
It was to be erased.
Like data deleted from a system—
never to be remembered again.
“Why… why does it have to be like that…?”
No answer.
Her smile was unchanged.
As if she had known this was the outcome all along.
“Tanaka… my mom… and… Yuto…!”
As the name slipped out, Kenichi gasped.
(…What did I just say?)
He hadn’t realized it.
But he had spoken it aloud—“Yuto.”
——Yuto?
A faint shadow stirred deep within his memory.
Something important.
Something he had almost remembered.
But it was like reaching into mist.
He couldn’t quite grasp it.
“If I disappear… will everything really go back?”
He bit his lip and glared at the options in front of him.
Restore everything
Postpone your decision
If he didn’t choose, this nightmare would never end.
But if he did—
“…Tell me something.”
Kenichi raised his voice once more.
“If I disappear… will the world really be ‘restored’?
Can you promise me that?”
The shrine maiden tilted her head,
as if to say,
“That question has no meaning.”
Then she spoke the same words she had before:
“Please make your selection.”
Those were the only words allowed here.
Kenichi looked down.
He didn’t know what truly lay beyond this choice.
He didn’t even know what “disappearing” would feel like.
But he knew—
There was no time left.
