The Digital Priestess — Episode 23: Uninstall Denied

Morning.

Kenichi woke to the sound of his alarm,
a dull ache lingering behind his eyes.
He had the feeling he’d been dreaming—
but couldn’t remember a single detail.

From the moment he opened his eyes,
a faint discomfort clung to his chest.

(…What was I doing yesterday?)

Still half-asleep, he opened his phone.
The crimson torii gate icon of Miko Weather sat on the screen, unchanged.
Just seeing it sparked a vague memory—he’d been thinking about something important.

(…Right. I was researching the app.)

He vaguely remembered looking it up late at night.
But everything beyond that was a blur.
Only the act of “researching” floated in his mind.

Uneasy, he opened his laptop.
He tried to check his browsing history—
but everything from the night before was gone.

(…What the hell?)

He searched through message boards, scrolled through sites—
but nothing came up.
Not even the thread he was sure he’d seen.

He couldn’t remember the title.
Couldn’t remember who he talked to.
Just the lingering sense that a conversation had taken place.

That’s when he noticed a notebook on the edge of his desk.

(…What’s this?)

He opened it.
One page had a single scribbled line:

“Nagi — there’s no escape.”

(…Nagi…? Who’s that?)

The moment he read the name, something stirred inside him—
a memory almost surfacing, then sinking again.
It felt like his thoughts were wrapped in mist.

(…I don’t know that name. But… I feel like we talked. About something important.)

A dull pain throbbed in his temple.

(…What is this… it’s sickening.)

He closed the notebook and looked at his phone.

He was almost certain now.
This app—Miko Weather—was up to something.

People were disappearing.
Memories were being rewritten.
And even he was starting to fall apart.

(…I can’t take this anymore.)

If this continued, he’d be next.
He was sure of it.

Kenichi pressed and held the app icon on his home screen.
“Miko Weather.”

He hit “Delete.”

But—

“Unable to delete.”

The message filled the screen.

(…What?)

He tried again.
Same result.

Even in the app settings, the “Uninstall” button was grayed out—
untouchable.

Then, the screen flickered.

And suddenly—
the shrine maiden appeared.

White robes. Crimson hakama.
Hair ornaments with tiny bells.
That same soft, unreadable smile.

“Your future… no longer belongs to you.”

The screen went black.

Kenichi nearly dropped his phone.
A chill ran up his spine—
as if the device in his hand no longer belonged to him.

(…What does it mean… my future?)

That thought alone sent a wave of cold through his entire body.
