The Digital Priestess — Episode 22: Three Choices

Late at night, Kenichi sat frozen in front of his laptop.

The search term: “Miko Weather.”

No matter how many times he searched,
nothing came up.
No reviews.
No app descriptions.
No social media posts.

It was as if the app had never existed.

(…That can’t be.)

And yet, it was still installed on his phone.
Still sending him notifications.
Still bearing that crimson torii gate icon.

It was real.
But it didn’t exist online.
A strange contradiction.

He tried changing his search terms.

“future weather choice scary app”

Scrolling a bit further down, a link caught his eye—
a thread on an anonymous message board called “Kaidan Story Board.”

The title:
“Ever had your life ruined by a prediction app?”

(…Could this be it?)

He clicked the link.
Most of the posts were obvious fiction or low-effort jokes.

But one stood out:

No.89
I’m still choosing.
But I’m reaching my limit.
Something’s seriously wrong with this app.

The username was “Nagi.”

Kenichi grabbed at the chance like a drowning man clutching at driftwood.
He hit the reply button.

No.101 (Kenichi)
Nagi, if you’re still here, please tell me.
I’ve been caught up in “that app.”
I’ve already… chosen several people.
I feel like I’m losing my mind.
Please, I just want to understand.

A few minutes later, a reply appeared.

No.102 (Nagi)
You too, huh…
It’s been a while since I met someone else who went through the same thing.

Apparently, the board had a real-time chat feature.
Kenichi typed again with trembling fingers.

What is that app?
Can it be deleted?

Nagi:
I’ve tried.
But when I did, the “correction” sped up.
The world began rewriting itself to erase me—
and no one noticed.

Kenichi’s breath caught.
He typed again.

Then what can I do?
Is there a way to escape?

There was a pause.

Then Nagi replied.

There are three options.
One: Keep choosing.
But that means sacrificing others.
Two: Stop choosing.
But that’s like accepting punishment.
Three… let yourself disappear.

Kenichi’s heart froze.

(…That’s it? Those are the only ways?)

He stared at the screen, waiting.

After a few seconds, Nagi added one more message.

…I’m tired.
Every time I choose,
I feel like a piece of me fades away.
Like I’m not even myself anymore.

So I’m ending it here.
Sorry.
Maybe it’s still too early for you,
but…

So, Kenichi—
what will you do?

As Kenichi read, the edges of the screen seemed to blur.
He tried to respond—
but his vision faded, and the words melted into fog.

The next thing he knew,
he was slumped in his chair, fast asleep.
