The Digital Priestess — Episode 14: There’s No Turning Back
The shrine maiden’s question remained on the screen.
“Would you like to get it back?”
Kenichi sat motionless, still gripping his phone.
He didn’t know why Tanaka had disappeared, or how it had happened.
But what scared him most was how the world kept moving as if nothing had ever changed.
(…If it’s possible… yeah, I want him back. But…)
A strange feeling stirred in his chest.
That question—it wasn’t just “kind.”
Behind the shrine maiden’s soft smile, he could clearly sense something else.
Something demanding payment.
—But even so… did he have to choose?
Kenichi tapped the screen.
It darkened again.
The crimson torii gate emerged, and the shrine maiden appeared behind it.
Her voice was calm and cold.
“To restore what was lost, you must offer something you hold dear.”
His throat tightened.
“…What?”
The word slipped out on reflex.
“Offer”—the word echoed over and over in his head.
“W-Wait, hold on. What do you mean? My what exactly…?”
But the maiden said nothing.
She kept smiling.
No explanation.
No conditions.
No details.
Just that one phrase—
burned into his memory like sound turned into scar.
“You must offer something you hold dear.”
Kenichi stood frozen, staring at the screen.
He felt like the ground beneath him was crumbling.
If he chose “yes,” maybe Tanaka really would come back.
But in exchange—
(…Would it be Mom…?)
The thought alone made his stomach turn.
To get something back, he’d have to lose something else.
If that were true—
he had nothing worth trading.
“…Don’t do this. Don’t make me choose…”
His mouth was dry.
Sweat ran down his neck.
His fingers trembled.
And still, the question remained.
YES —
NO —
The options appeared on the screen.
There was no running from it.
Even if he ignored it, even if he left—
the question would come back.
(…So what the hell am I supposed to do…?)
His mind spun.
But letting Tanaka be erased forever…
That would be like erasing himself from the world.
Kenichi forced his mouth to move.
“…I want him back.”
He didn’t even know who he was saying it to.
He just knew he had to say it.
With a trembling finger, he tapped “YES.”
The options vanished.
The shrine maiden appeared again.
That same smile.
And then—
words that sounded like a blessing:
“Thank you for your cooperation.”
The screen returned to the lock screen.
The app icon sat quietly, just a red torii like nothing had happened.
Kenichi slowly lowered the phone to his chest.
(…This is really okay… right?)
He had made his choice.
There was no turning back now.
He still didn’t know—
what exactly he had offered.
