The Digital Priestess — Episode 13: I’m Not Ready to Answer

Sitting alone on the stairs, Kenichi hugged his knees.
In his hand, his phone still pulsed faintly, the aftershock of a recent vibration.

On the lock screen, a message stared back at him—cold, mechanical, and undeniable.

“Something you hold dear has disappeared.”

It read like a delivery update.
But he knew all too well what it meant.

Tanaka.
He’d existed up until just yesterday.
His voice, his habits, the way he talked—all of it was still vivid in Kenichi’s mind.
But in this world, there wasn’t a single trace left.

Kenichi silently swiped the screen and opened Miko Weather.

The display darkened.
A crimson torii gate shimmered into view.
From behind it, the shrine maiden slowly emerged.

White robes. Black hair. That same soft smile.
The image hadn’t changed.
But now, it felt deeply unsettling.

Her lips moved slowly.

“Would you like to get it back?”

Kenichi’s breath caught.

It wasn’t a voice.
It wasn’t text.
It felt like the words had echoed directly into his mind.

(…Get it back?)

Get what? Get who?
Obviously, Tanaka.

But how do you get someone back?

“…That’s even possible?”

Kenichi muttered.
The shrine maiden gave no answer.
She just kept smiling.
As if to say—the answer had already been decided.

(…If I could get him back…)

If Tanaka could return to this world.
If they could mess around again, talk about nothing, laugh like before—
If that ordinary life could be restored—

(…But then…)

A knot formed in his chest.

To get something back—doesn’t that mean giving something up?

“There’s no way it’s free… right?”

He said it quietly, as if to convince himself.

But the question lingered.

“Would you like to get it back?”

No further explanation.
No “yes” or “no” options.
Just that same line, suspended on the screen.

Kenichi turned the phone face-down.
He felt like something was still missing.
No—maybe nothing was missing.
Maybe he was just scared to decide.

He could hear the voices of his seminar classmates nearby.
Laughter. Footsteps. Doors opening and closing.
All of it sounded real.
And yet… he didn’t feel like he was part of it anymore.

It was like he alone had been left behind in a warped world.
No one noticed the change.
No one remembered that Tanaka had ever existed.

(…Am I the one who’s gone crazy?)

But still—he had been there.

Kenichi opened his phone again.

The question was still there.

“Would you like to get it back?”

Only silence answered.
And that silence crept up on him, slow and suffocating.

Then—he thought he saw the shrine maiden’s eyes narrow.
Just a little.
