The Digital Priestess — Episode 9: A Day Too Quiet

Morning.
As always, a notification from Miko Weather greeted him when he picked up his phone.

“Today’s weather: cloudy with a chance of sun. The future will shift toward something better.”

(…“Something better,” huh? Vague as ever.)

The memory of yesterday’s earbuds—and that strange distortion—lingered in his mind.
Ever since the app had warned of a “haze upon your ears,” the world seemed to carry a muffled weight.

Kenichi decided to carry on as usual, acting calm while staying on guard.
But the more he tried not to think about it, the more hyper-aware he became of the sounds around him.

On the train to campus, the announcements were oddly hard to catch.
Even leaning closer, the words wouldn’t register.
Construction noise on the walk to school sounded distant—
as if echoing from mountains far away.

(…So this “ear haze” is still going?)

Still, nothing had broken today.
Classes went on normally.
The seminar professor cracked a few pointless jokes that made people laugh, as usual.
Kenichi even had the energy to joke around with his friends during small talk.

(…So maybe nothing’s going to happen today after all?)

And yet, that very stillness felt wrong.
The absence of anything happening—it felt like the calm before a storm.

Back home, he tossed his bag onto his desk and sighed.
He felt a bit relieved… but also like he couldn’t afford to let his guard down.
A strange tension hung in the air.

He pulled out his phone and casually unlocked it.

—That’s when it appeared.

A single notification at the top of the screen.

“Someone you hold dear will disappear.”

(…!)

His throat tightened.
A sensation like ice piercing deep into his chest.

“…No way…”

His fingers trembled as he tapped the alert,
but all it did was open the main screen of Miko Weather.
No shrine maiden this time.
Only the crimson torii gate, swaying faintly.

(…It really happened… Thinking nothing would was too naïve.)

Unease crawled up his spine, slow and sure.
Who was “someone you hold dear”?
How would they “disappear”?
And more importantly—
Could it be stopped?

Kenichi sat down on the bed, staring at the screen.
The maiden in the phone said nothing now.
Only that single, horrifying message had crossed into his reality.

Tomorrow, something would vanish.

And he had all the warning he needed.
