The Digital Priestess — Episode 10: Can’t Be Undone
Morning.
Kenichi woke up before his alarm went off.
His sleep had been terrible—he felt like he’d dreamed, but couldn’t recall any of it.
When he picked up his phone, the notification on the lock screen hit him like a punch to the chest.
“Someone you hold dear will disappear.”
Same as yesterday.
Same words, same layout—not a pixel out of place.
But today, the message clung to his skin like reality itself.
(…What the hell is this…?)
He threw off his blanket and opened the app.
From beyond the torii gate, the shrine maiden appeared, swaying into view.
That same expression. A smile that was both gentle and cold—like a mask frozen in time.
Kenichi shouted without thinking.
“Don’t decide that for me! I never… I never asked for this!”
The maiden tilted her head slowly.
And in that voice, she replied:
“This is the future you desired.”
“No, it’s not! I never said that!”
His voice trembled with emotion.
It wasn’t just anger—it was fear.
“…I didn’t choose anything. I didn’t wish for anything.
So why does someone have to disappear…?”
No reply.
Her gaze only conveyed one thing: everything was proceeding as planned.
And then—it hit him.
That memory.
The moment her voice had echoed from his phone:
“Would you like me… to gaze into your future?”
And his casual answer at the time:
“Sure. Go ahead.”
(…That’s it… That’s when it started.)
He had answered.
Not seriously. Just messing around.
It didn’t feel like a real choice. Not back then.
But now—everything was different.
“…I don’t want to see the future anymore. Stop looking without permission.”
His grip tightened around the phone.
But the screen didn’t change.
It was as if the maiden was saying: the future has already been chosen.
(…Because I said “show me,” I can’t stop it now?)
Afternoon.
In class, Kenichi couldn’t focus.
The teacher’s voice sounded distant.
Even his classmates’ laughter felt disconnected, like it didn’t belong to this world.
Any moment now, someone—anyone—could be gone.
It no longer felt like a paranoid thought.
It felt real.
He checked his phone again.
The same notification remained:
“Someone you hold dear will disappear.”
What did “disappear” mean?
Would they die?
Be erased from memory?
Vanished from existence entirely…?
Evening.
At home, his mother was watching TV and laughing.
Just a normal, peaceful moment.
The kind you’re supposed to be grateful for.
“I’m home.”
“Welcome back. Dinner’s ready.”
(…Please… don’t let anything change.)
That night, he couldn’t sleep.
He kept checking the notification again and again in the dark, crushed under the weight of a fear he couldn’t delete.
Who would have thought—
that a single, careless sentence from the past could lead to something so irreversible?
“I never wanted to see the future… not like this.”
On his screen, the shrine maiden smiled softly.
