The Digital Priestess — Episode 40: I Thought I Came Back
Kenichi stepped into the apartment.
The scent of miso soup lingered in the air.
Footsteps echoed lightly down the hall.
His father sat at the table, sipping tea, newspaper in hand.
The TV murmured with the weather forecast.
His mother stood in the kitchen, frying eggs.
It was the morning he’d wanted.
The morning he had chosen to bring back.
He took a breath.
“…I’m home.”
No response.
He stepped forward.
“Mom.
Dad.”
Neither turned to look at him.
They moved naturally—completely naturally—
as if he didn’t exist.
“Hey… I’m talking to you.”
Still nothing.
Kenichi raised his voice.
“Dad!”
His father didn’t flinch.
Didn’t even blink.
“…What the hell is this?”
Kenichi stepped closer, reaching out.
“Mom—!”
He touched her arm.
She didn’t react.
The pan sizzled.
The eggs cooked.
Kenichi’s hand trembled.
He took a step back.
He picked up the chair across from his father.
Dragged it noisily across the floor.
Sat down.
Knocked on the table.
Not even a glance.
His mother walked past him with a plate.
She paused—
shifted the chair slightly.
(She noticed the chair was out of place.
But not me.)
She adjusted it.
Placed the plate down.
Sat beside his father.
They began to eat.
They were talking.
“…That corner store shut down, huh.”
“Yeah, the landlord passed away, I think.”
Their voices.
Ordinary.
Unchanged.
Kenichi couldn’t breathe.
“…So I’m here…
but I’m not.”
He stood slowly.
Backed away.
“Did I really come back…?”
He looked at his hands.
They were solid.
Warm.
He could move.
Think.
Feel.
But no one saw him.
No one heard him.
It wasn’t that he was dead.
It was something worse.
“…I’m not part of this world anymore.”
The truth hit him all at once.
He hadn’t vanished.
He had been cut off.
Not from reality—
but from recognition.
