The Digital Priestess — Episode 26: Resistance Is Unnecessary

“…Why… why do you keep making me choose…?”

Kenichi knelt on the floor, gripping his phone tightly with both hands.
The screen was already locked, and the choices that had appeared moments ago were gone.
Only the Miko Weather icon, its crimson torii gate, sat quietly on the home screen.

(Is it… really over?)

He stood up on unsteady feet and sank onto the bed.
His hands trembling, he opened the phone’s settings,
desperately trying once more to delete the app.

But—

The “Uninstall” button was still grayed out.

(No matter what I do… I can’t erase it.)

He tapped it over and over.
Restarted the phone.
Nothing changed.

“Just stop already… what did I ever do to deserve this…?”

He bit his lip as he muttered.

All he wanted…
was to glimpse the future.
To be happy—just a little.

“Please… just let it end already…!”

His voice cracked and faded.

Then—

Beep.

A digital sound, and the phone screen lit up on its own.

“…!”

Reflexively, he looked down—
and there she was.

The shrine maiden.

But something was different.

For the first time—
she was smiling.

As if she’d been waiting for this moment all along.

“Kenichi-san.”

She spoke his name.

Her voice echoed directly in his ear.
The air grew heavy.
The room felt several degrees colder.

“Your future is no longer your own.”

“Don’t mess with me…!”

Kenichi tried to hurl the phone.

But—

His hand wouldn’t move.

It was heavy.
Frozen.
Paralyzed.

On the screen, the shrine maiden slowly raised her right hand.
Her fingers began to push outward,
as if emerging through the screen—
crossing the boundary into the real world.

“St-stop…!”

His voice shook.
But the hand did not.

The cold, translucent “white hand” extended into the room,
ripping reality like paper.

“Resistance is unnecessary. Optimization… has already begun.”

Her voice was final, like reading off a status report.

“No… I don’t want to disappear—!”

But before he could finish—

The shrine maiden’s hand touched his chest.

Chiiiing…

A bell rang softly.

Kenichi’s body tilted as if pulled downward.

(Stop…!)

Darkness.

The floor vanished.
Gravity reversed.
He fell. Downward. Endlessly.

Sound vanished.
Light vanished.

Everything was swallowed by darkness—
and so was Kenichi’s consciousness.
