The Call of the Blue Abyss
The Dream of the Abyss
Takuya, a graduate student, was part of a marine research team conducting a seabed survey along the local coast. Having been captivated by the ocean since childhood, he felt a surge of excitement at the prospect of exploring the unknown realm of the deep sea. The coastal waters were renowned for their vibrant coral reefs and diverse marine life, but recent studies had drawn attention to an area marked by a sudden depth drop, ominously called the “Blue Abyss.”
The Abyss was the subject of much discussion among researchers, as it emitted unusual magnetic fields during every observation. Yet, precise data about this enigmatic zone remained elusive. For Takuya, the call to “uncover the unknown" was more than a mission—it was a belief.
On the day of the survey, Takuya boarded the research vessel with his colleague Akane and their advisor, Professor Murakami. Their goal was a deep-sea investigation of the Blue Abyss. Equipped with a state-of-the-art ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), they planned to monitor the ocean floor in real-time through displays onboard the ship.
At first, everything proceeded smoothly. The ROV’s camera revealed the crystal-clear waters, teeming with vibrant corals and schools of fish. But as the depth exceeded 500 meters, the footage began to distort in strange ways.
“Is something interfering with the signal?” Akane’s puzzled voice broke the silence. Professor Murakami furrowed his brows, studying the monitor intently.
“It could be a magnetic anomaly. Let’s record everything,” the professor instructed. Takuya promptly began logging the data.
As they ventured deeper, the screen displayed something baffling—an intricate, unearthly pattern etched into the rocky seabed. It didn’t resemble anything natural. The shapes had the precision of something deliberately carved.
“Is this… man-made?” Takuya muttered. Akane nodded hesitantly.
“But how could there be anything man-made in a place like this?”
Suddenly, the ship shuddered faintly. A strange noise emanated from the ROV, and the camera feed became riddled with static.
“What’s happening?” Professor Murakami’s voice rose above the growing tension. At that moment, the monitor went completely black, only to be engulfed moments later by an overwhelming blue light.
Yet, it wasn’t just light. From the ship’s speakers came a sound—a deep, resonant hum that bore an eerie resemblance to a human voice. The sound was unsettling, yet impossible to ignore, as though it had latched onto their very minds.
“What… was that?” Akane’s voice trembled, her fear evident. Takuya was equally speechless.
From the depths of the Blue Abyss, something had called out to them. There was no other explanation.
The Voice of the Abyss
Even after returning to the ship, Takuya couldn’t shake the eerie “voice" from his mind. It wasn’t words—just sounds. Yet, there was something unmistakably human about the emotion it conveyed. Unable to share the bizarre experience with anyone, he resolved to investigate its meaning alone.
The day after the ship returned to port, Takuya headed to the lab to review the survey data. The ROV’s recordings revealed that intense electromagnetic interference began the moment the blue light appeared. While parts of the video had been entirely erased, the audio had miraculously survived.
Takuya put on headphones and pressed play. The voice he had heard on the ship filled his ears once more, sending a cold sweat trickling down his back. It was not something that could be dismissed as mere noise. Beneath the deep, droning hum was a rhythm faintly reminiscent of breathing. If he strained his ears, it almost sounded like… words.
“…I must go…”
A strange compulsion stirred within Takuya. It wasn’t rational—it was primal. That night, he dreamed of being consumed by swirling blue light. In his dream, he felt the unmistakable certainty that something awaited him at the bottom of the abyss. When he awoke, his hands were cold and damp.
A few days later, Takuya returned to the lab to begin his own investigation. Though his colleague Akane urged him to rest, he couldn’t confide in anyone. A growing sense of duty told him that this mystery was his alone to solve.
Researching the area surrounding the Blue Abyss, Takuya discovered records of a strange incident decades ago. A fishing boat had vanished in the same region, only to be discovered weeks later, adrift and empty. There were no traces of the crew, but eerie blue stains were found aboard the vessel—stains that looked as though something had touched it.
Older accounts told of the “God of the Abyss," a local legend among fishermen. They feared an unknown presence dwelling in the deep, appeasing it with offerings to avoid its wrath. As Takuya delved further into these stories, he began to feel that this wasn’t mere superstition.
“What if… there really is something down there?”
Caught between curiosity and fear, Takuya found himself increasingly consumed by the desire to uncover the truth. More than anything, he needed to understand the voice that had called to him.
One night, the dream returned—more vivid than before. He found himself inside a submersible, descending into the depths of the abyss. His body refused to move as the voice surrounded him, relentless and clear.
“Come… come… come…”
The voice repeated itself, growing louder, until it began calling his name.
“Takuya… come…”
He awoke gasping for air. The clock read 3:00 a.m. The room felt uncomfortably humid, his heart pounding uncontrollably. On his desk lay a small, blue shell that hadn’t been there before.
“This isn’t just a dream…”
He instinctively understood its significance. The shell was a message—a summons. That same night, Takuya resolved to board the ship once more, setting his course for the Blue Abyss. The truth awaited him there, and he could no longer turn away.
Confronting the Abyss
In the stillness of the night, Takuya sat alone in a small boat, heading toward the Blue Abyss. His heart pounded in his chest, and in his hand, he clutched the blue shell that had appeared in his dream. The moonlight reflected softly off the calm ocean surface as he stopped the boat directly over the Abyss, strapping on the simple diving gear he had prepared.
“It’s calling me… I know it,” he murmured, reassuring himself, before plunging into the water.
The ocean was pitch-black, yet strangely, he felt no fear. Instead, a sense of familiarity enveloped him. As he descended deeper, the darkness grew impenetrable, but in the distance, a faint, shimmering blue light began to flicker. It swayed gently, as if beckoning him forward.
Following the glow, the voice became clearer, more distinct.
“Takuya… you’ve come…”
When he finally reached the center of the light, his breath caught. A figure, vaguely human in shape, stood motionless, gazing at him. Takuya couldn’t immediately grasp what it was—its form, its essence. But he felt its silent plea deep within his soul.
“…Who… are you?”
The moment the question left his lips, his consciousness was swallowed by an overwhelming darkness.
Memories of the Abyss
When Takuya opened his eyes, he found himself lying in an unfamiliar place. It was like another world entirely. The space was bathed in an ethereal blue light, and around him were bizarrely shaped rocks and countless glowing-eyed creatures drifting silently. Strangely, he felt no hostility from them—only an uncanny calm.
“Is this… the bottom of the Abyss?” he whispered, his voice trembling.
The voice returned, resonating deeply in his ears.
“We have been waiting… for you to come.”
The source of the voice appeared—a shadowy figure cloaked in blue light, vaguely reminiscent of a human. Its gaze bore into him, not with malice, but with an unspoken longing. These were the ones drawn to the Abyss, who had never returned, now existing as echoes of what they once were.
“It is time for you to choose. Will you go back… or stay here?”
A sense of profound tranquility enveloped Takuya. The voice of the Abyss wasn’t one of fear, but of gentle acceptance. Yet, he could sense the eternity of solitude that awaited beyond its kindness.
Faced with the final decision, Takuya clutched the blue shell in his hand and answered softly.
“I… I will return. There are things I still need to tell.”
In that instant, his body rose through the water, and consciousness returned. He awoke in his small boat, floating on the ocean’s surface. The blue shell he had held so tightly had crumbled into fragments, as if marking the conclusion of his choice.
As Takuya quietly navigated the boat back to shore, he made a silent vow. He would share the visions and the encounters he had experienced in the Abyss with those who would listen. The memories of that enigmatic place were now his burden—and his purpose.
