The Digital Priestess — Episode 27: Into the App
——Darkness.
There was nothing to see.
Nothing to hear.
Kenichi couldn’t even tell if he had a body.
All that existed was endless, cold, silent darkness.
(…Where… am I?)
A voice—not aloud, but echoing inside his mind.
His awareness drifted, sank, floated again.
Then suddenly, he felt a gentle push upward.
The inside of his eyelids began to brighten.
Slowly, Kenichi opened his eyes.
What he saw was a strange and unfamiliar place.
The ground looked like soil, but mist drifted here and there,
making everything feel unreal.
The sky was a cloudy gray, with no sun or clouds.
No sound. No wind.
And yet, a strange, invisible rustle brushed against his skin.
(…Is this… a dream?)
He tried to stand.
His body moved sluggishly, but it did move.
He could feel his feet against the ground.
But he knew—this wasn’t reality.
Then, something caught his eye.
——A torii gate.
Shrouded in haze, it stood in the distance—bright red,
as if floating in midair.
(…That looks familiar…)
Of course it did.
He’d seen it every morning in the Miko Weather app.
It was the exact same torii gate from the startup screen.
(…Don’t tell me… I’m inside the app…?)
Unbelievable.
But there was no other explanation.
Kenichi felt himself drawn to it.
He began walking toward the torii.
His footsteps made no sound,
but he could still feel the ground beneath each step.
Though the world was silent,
his heartbeat pounded loud in his ears.
(…What the hell is this place?)
As he got closer, the uneasy feeling in his chest grew.
It wasn’t nostalgia—
but it felt like he’d walked this path many times before.
When he finally stood before the torii,
he gasped.
Up close, it was glowing.
A soft red light shimmered from within,
as if the gate were lit from the inside.
Though it appeared wooden, it gave off a cold, metallic aura.
(…I have no choice, do I?)
He turned to look behind him.
There was nothing.
No path.
No space.
Just emptiness.
The only way was forward.
Kenichi took a quiet breath and looked straight at the gate.
He took a step forward.
That’s when he heard it—
Chirin…
A bell.
Not in his ears, but inside his mind.
A clear, delicate chime that rang deep within.
A chill ran down his spine.
(…What’s waiting beyond this?)
There was no answer.
Only the shimmer of the space beyond the torii,
gently rippling like a veil.
Kenichi stepped closer.
One foot at a time.
