The Digital Priestess — Episode 35: Only After You Choose (Revised)
“Hey…”
Kenichi’s voice trembled as he looked up at the shrine maiden.
“If I… disappear… will everything really go back…?”
It wasn’t so much a question as a plea.
In the fog of his memory, he saw traces of the people who had vanished.
His mom.
And someone else… someone he still couldn’t remember.
(If my disappearance could bring them back—)
He found himself clinging to that thought.
Trying to justify the impossible.
The shrine maiden smiled gently, unchanged.
“Everything will return according to fate.”
“…Does that mean it’ll actually go back?”
“When fate is in order, so too will the world return to order.”
The words were vague.
Like a loop meant to avoid the truth.
“…You’re dodging the question.”
Kenichi murmured, lowering his eyes.
(When fate is in order… but it never actually says things will go back.)
“Will Mom be there in the kitchen, making breakfast?
Will Yuto…”
—Yuto.
The name nearly slipped from his lips, but he caught it just in time.
(I can’t remember. But I know he was important.)
That feeling caught in his throat—like a name that wouldn’t come.
And even that was fading, dissolving into the fog.
“What does ‘restore’ even mean, exactly…?
Will everyone’s memories, their records, actually go back to the way they were?”
The shrine maiden stepped forward.
No sound.
Not even a whisper from her feet.
“The results appear after the choice is made.
The future is not fixed. It changes according to your decision.”
“…So you don’t actually know what will happen, do you.”
“I only bring things into alignment.”
Kenichi let out a dry laugh.
“…So my life, my memories, everything I’ve been—
was just material for your ‘alignment.’”
The shrine maiden neither confirmed nor denied.
To her, this was simply how the world worked.
Kenichi looked up again.
Not with defiance, or hope—
just a quiet need to be sure.
“…Show me the choices. One more time.”
The shrine maiden nodded and raised her hand.
In the next moment, the space shimmered,
and the familiar options appeared once again.
Restore everything
Postpone your decision
Kenichi stared at the words.
But he didn’t reach out right away.
“Will it… really go back?”
He repeated the question, not to the shrine maiden—
but to himself.
Would choosing be enough?
Or would it lead to something irreversible?
His heart wavered, caught in that terrifying in-between.
