The Digital Priestess — Episode 38: Was It All a Dream?
Warm light streamed through the curtains.
The usual scent of his pillow.
The hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.
The faint sound of birds outside the window.
Kenichi blinked.
“…I’m home?”
He sat up on the bed.
His room looked exactly the same as always.
The textbooks he’d half-read.
The empty cup of instant ramen.
The hoodie tossed over the chair.
Everything was in its place.
Perfectly.
He looked down at his hand.
Flesh.
Warm.
Solid.
He wasn’t see-through.
He hadn’t disappeared.
“…Was it a dream?”
He reached for his phone on the desk.
No notifications.
No torii gate icon.
Just a blank home screen.
He checked the list of installed apps.
Nothing.
Miko Weather was gone.
His heartbeat quickened.
(It’s not there… it’s really not there.)
He stood up.
Pulled open his curtains.
The street outside.
People walking.
Bicycles clinking past.
Sunlight bouncing off shop signs.
Too normal.
Too perfect.
(I chose to disappear… right?
I should’ve been gone.)
He touched his chest.
It was beating.
His feet were on the ground.
He was breathing.
Alive.
“…Why am I still here?”
His voice trembled.
Was this a dream?
Or had he just dreamed that world?
He looked around the room again.
Something was off.
It wasn’t that anything was missing.
Everything was exactly where it should be.
But still—
it felt like something important was gone.
(No… someone.)
That strange, heavy emptiness pressed against his chest.
(Who did I forget?)
He couldn’t remember.
But he had to know.
He grabbed his hoodie and headed for the door.
If this world had really been “restored”—
he needed to see it for himself.
