The Digital Priestess — Episode 15: He’s Really Back
That morning, Kenichi woke earlier than usual.
He wasn’t even sure if he’d slept.
Ever since he’d tapped “YES” the night before,
he’d felt like something had already been decided the moment he opened his eyes.
(…Tanaka… is he really coming back?)
Still not fully convinced, Kenichi made his way to campus.
On the train, he checked his phone again and again.
No notifications from Miko Weather.
Then, the moment he opened the classroom door—
he caught a familiar silhouette out of the corner of his eye.
(—There.)
Tanaka was sitting there, casually messing with his phone.
The same Tanaka who had completely vanished from existence was now right there—
like nothing had ever happened.
Kenichi rushed over without thinking.
“Tanaka…!”
“Huh? …Oh. Hey.”
Tanaka’s voice held a trace of surprise.
Kenichi’s sudden intensity clearly caught him off guard.
“You’re really… I’m so glad…”
“Uh… did something happen to you?”
“No, it’s nothing… I’m just… really glad.”
Tanaka squinted suspiciously.
“Since when are you this emotional? Kinda freaky, man.”
Kenichi quickly pulled himself together and shook his head.
“Nah, I’m just sleep-deprived. Had a weird dream, that’s all.”
Tanaka shrugged and laughed.
Everyone around them accepted Tanaka’s presence like it was completely normal.
His name was back in the seminar group chat.
He appeared in old photos again—just like before.
(…He’s really back.)
Kenichi sat down, feeling an odd mix of relief and dread rising in his chest.
(…But now…)
He pulled out his phone and looked at the screen.
Just as he’d feared, the notification was there.
“Something you hold dear will disappear.”
So simply reversing the loss wasn’t enough.
The price—hadn’t been paid yet.
But it was coming. That much was certain.
(What’s going to disappear?
Who?)
A face flashed through Kenichi’s mind: his mother.
He tried to remember what he’d said to her before leaving that morning—
but couldn’t recall.
He forced the thought away.
(…No. Not yet. Don’t think about it.)
Tanaka was sitting next to him, tossing out jokes like always.
He really had come back. That much was real.
Laughter filled the classroom.
Kenichi smiled awkwardly,
watching the scene from a strange, detached place—
as if he didn’t quite belong.
(…Who is it going to be this time?)
His phone screen still glowed.
The notification hadn’t disappeared.
