The Digital Priestess — Episode 7: The Beginning of Distortion
The alarm blared, and Kenichi awoke to find his phone buzzing beside his pillow.
A notification from Miko Weather lit up the screen.
“Today’s weather: partly cloudy with sunshine. Be careful with something you hold dear."
(…‘Something I hold dear’? That sounds more ominous than usual.)
Furrowing his brow, he sluggishly got out of bed, washed his face, and started preparing breakfast.
The smell of toasted bread and freshly brewed coffee filled the room, easing his mind just a bit.
His eyes drifted to the wireless earbuds resting on the table—
a recent purchase and one of his favorites. The sound quality was excellent, and he used them every day.
(Does this count as something I hold dear? No way.)
Still half-doubting, he popped the earbuds in and tapped his usual playlist on the phone.
—but there was no sound.
(Huh? Did it fail to connect?)
Bluetooth was definitely connected.
He tried turning them off and on, but still nothing.
Neither bud made a single sound.
(They worked just fine yesterday… What the hell?)
Panicking a little, he restarted his phone and re-paired the device, but the silence remained.
A thick, heavy silence that seemed to press against his ears.
(…Did they break?)
Suddenly, the morning’s message flashed through his mind:
“Be careful with something you hold dear."
(Wait… was it talking about these?)
It felt like more than just coincidence.
But thinking too deeply about it only made things worse, so he forced his thoughts away.
He pulled out a pair of backup wired earphones from his bag.
The cord was annoying, and the sound wasn’t as crisp, but it would have to do.
When he tried them out, they worked—
but somehow the audio felt hazy, like the world’s volume had been dulled.
Classes went on as usual.
He sat through lectures and even showed up for seminar.
Laughed a few times at the professor’s jokes.
Still, that unease lingered in the back of his mind, like smoke that wouldn’t clear.
During lunch break, he opened his phone without thinking.
The Miko Weather app sat quietly, still bearing the red torii gate and tiny bell icon.
But somehow… it looked different.
Just slightly. A shape that felt off—
(Was it always like that?)
On the way home, he tried the wireless earbuds one last time.
No response. Definitely broken.
(Guess I’ll take them in tomorrow… Hope the warranty’s still valid.)
As he unlocked his phone, another notification popped up:
“Next, a haze will fall upon your ears."
(…What?)
He stared at the screen, frozen for several seconds.
Haze? On his ears?
Was it implying hearing loss? Or something else entirely?
Losing his hearing seemed too far-fetched.
But that strange muffled audio from earlier—was that just bad luck?
Maybe it wasn’t the earbuds.
Maybe “sound itself” was starting to distort.
His heart gave a sudden thump.
An inexplicable unease seeped into his chest, slow and chilling.
Kenichi turned the phone face-down and took a deep breath.
He’d been pretending not to notice it—
but now, the unease had shape.
Something was reaching through the app and starting to touch reality.
