The Digital Priestess — Episode 8: Overwritten
That morning, the sound of the door closing echoed louder than usual.
Everything else felt distant and muffled—
the wind, the rumble of cars, people talking.
All the usual background noise seemed to be filtering through a thick veil in the back of my mind.
(…So this is what they meant by “a haze in your ears”?)
Yesterday’s notification flashed through my mind.
“A haze will fall over your ears”—I hadn’t understood what it meant.
But now… this must be it.
It wasn’t that I couldn’t hear anymore.
Just that the sounds of the real world felt like they were covered in a film—an unnatural silence.
I walked toward the university, playing music through my phone.
It was a playlist I’d heard a hundred times before through my wired earphones.
But something felt… missing.
Parts of the sound seemed cut out.
The singer’s voice sounded strangely flat and emotionless.
(Was it always like this?)
I found myself turning up the volume without thinking.
But no matter how loud I made it, the haze didn’t lift.
It just made my ears feel tired.
I arrived on campus, blending into the usual buzz of students.
My friends were laughing like always, but even their laughter felt distant.
It was as if there was a subtle lag between what I saw and what I heard.
I walked into the classroom and set my phone down on the desk.
Something on the screen caught my eye.
(…Wait.)
The layout of my home screen had changed.
I checked it every morning—I would’ve noticed.
The SNS app that used to sit in the top left was now in the bottom right corner.
(Not again…)
The same thing had happened yesterday.
My memo app had moved, but I’d brushed it off, thinking maybe I was imagining things.
But it was happening again.
Could someone have messed with my phone? No…
The screen was locked, and there was no suspicious activity in the Screen Time logs.
(Did I really move it myself?)
I told myself that, but I wasn’t convinced.
Just to be sure, I took a screenshot of my home screen.
Next time something changed, I’d have proof.
During lunch break, I sat at a café and opened my phone.
I compared it to the screenshot from earlier—
and a chill ran down my spine.
In just a few hours, the icons had shifted again.
Slightly, but unmistakably.
(…What the hell is this?)
A mis-tap? A glitch?
No. This wasn’t that simple.
That strange distortion in sound earlier…
Something was getting in.
I opened Miko Weather again.
The shrine maiden on the screen was smiling, like always.
But today, her face looked just a bit clearer than yesterday.
Below her, a short message appeared:
“The future changes—little by little.”
Swallowing hard, I stared at the screen.
Up until yesterday, it was just a weird app.
But not anymore.
Something was definitely wrong.
Little by little, my reality was being overwritten.
And it was those tiny, almost invisible changes that made it so terrifying.
As I slipped my phone back into my pocket and started walking back to class, I muttered under my breath:
“…This isn’t something I can just brush off anymore.”
