The Digital Priestess — Episode 33: You Are the Distortion

“The future… is always uncertain.”

That line echoed softly through the strange space,

drifting in from somewhere beyond the mist.

Kenichi furrowed his brow.

“…Uncertain?”

The shrine maiden nodded slowly.

“Yes. The future is always unstable and fluid.

When the designated path is disrupted, a ‘distortion’ forms in the world.”

“So… that’s what this ‘correction’ thing is?”

“Exactly.”

Her voice was calm and gentle—

yet almost completely devoid of emotional warmth.

“In this world, things that were never meant to exist sometimes appear.

It may be a person.

It may be an event.

Or even just a single emotion.”

Kenichi’s throat tightened.

An ominous sense of dread crawled up his spine before he could even put it into words.

“…Don’t tell me… you mean…”

“You are one of them.”

She looked straight at him.

There was no hatred in her eyes.

No pity.

Just a cold, clinical clarity that said:

This is fact.

“…You’re saying I was… never supposed to exist?”

The moment he said it aloud, his knees buckled.

His body felt as if the ground beneath him had crumbled.

Everything he had believed—everything he thought he was—shook to its core.

“You’re wrong… I was born. I lived here.

I had a family. I had friends. I exist!”

“That, too, is a memory formed within the distortion.”

“Then… Tanaka… my mom… all of it… it’s because of me?”

The shrine maiden nodded.

“Because you were here, things that were meant to disappear remained.

Things that should’ve been erased… could not be.

The order was disrupted.”

“…So you’re saying this is my fault!?”

Kenichi’s voice cracked.

The weight of it all crashed down on him—

that his very existence had caused others to disappear.

How was anyone supposed to carry such a burden?

“You are not to blame.

But… an adjustment is necessary.”

“Adjustment… You mean I have to disappear, don’t you…?”

The shrine maiden said nothing.

She just nodded.

Kenichi’s body trembled, but he forced himself to stay upright.

“Then you’re saying the world without me…

was the way it was always supposed to be?”

A heavy silence.

But that silence… said more than words ever could.

——Yes.

He wasn’t meant to be here.

He was an exception.

A disturbance.

A noise in the system of the world.

“…What the hell…”

Kenichi clenched his fists.

A cold, gnawing loneliness crawled up his spine like ice.

(So just being alive… was already a mistake?)

And in that instant,

something deep inside his chest cracked.
