The Digital Priestess — Episode 32: Correction, Not Justice

“…What even are you?”

Kenichi’s voice trembled.

There was no anger, no fear, no clarity—
just a tangled mess of everything inside him.

He couldn’t move forward.
Not yet.
He needed to know the truth.

The shrine maiden blinked slowly.
Then, as if reading from a script, she answered:

“I simply maintain the balance of destiny.”

Her voice was gentle.
But somehow… mechanical.

“Balance…? Destiny…?
What does that even mean…?”

Kenichi furrowed his brows and stepped closer.

“So you’re saying… you’re messing with people’s futures?”

She said nothing.
Just kept smiling.

“What does ‘maintain’ mean to you?
Does it mean erasing people?
Is that what you mean by ‘correction’?”

Still no answer.

That silence—
that unbearable silence—gnawed at him more than any response could.

“…So what? You’re saying I was a mistake?”

He muttered, almost to himself.

For just a moment, he thought he saw her eyes flicker.

“…Are you even human?
Or are you just some program built into the app?”

Still no answer.

Only the same phrase again:

“I simply maintain the balance of destiny.”

(It’s like… it’s the only line she’s programmed to say.)

A cold shiver ran down Kenichi’s spine.

She wasn’t a person.
She wasn’t reacting emotionally.
She wasn’t trying to explain.

She existed only to fulfill a purpose.
To “maintain.”
To “correct.”

“…So the people you’ve been correcting…
Tanaka, my mom…
and the ones I can’t even remember anymore—
they were all part of your work?”

The shrine maiden gave the faintest of nods.

“So that’s your job…”

Kenichi exhaled sharply.

“To change people’s lives without their permission…
to erase them, rewrite them—
and you call that ‘balance’?”

Silence.

But that silence hurt more than words.

“To you, this is normal, isn’t it?”

Kenichi looked back at the floating options.

Restore everything
Postpone your decision

But now, his focus was no longer on the world “after restoration.”
He was starting to wonder what the world had looked like before it was “corrected.”

“…Tell me something.”

He stepped forward.

“Why are you doing this?”

The shrine maiden looked away—
just slightly.

Then, in the faintest whisper, almost like a sigh, she replied:

“The future… is always uncertain.”

And with those words—
a door seemed to open.
