The Digital Priestess — Episode 39: The World Moved On

Kenichi paused in front of the door.

(…What if nothing’s really back?)

The fear froze his legs.

What waited beyond the door?
Was it truly the “normal" world?
Or was it still some distorted continuation of the nightmare?

He didn’t know.
Not until he checked.

But—

(I have to go.)

He made up his mind and gripped the doorknob.
The door creaked open to reveal a familiar hallway,
carrying a faint trace of dust in the air.

Kicked-off sneakers.
The umbrella stand.
Family slippers by the wall.

(…None of it’s changed.)

He stepped toward the living room,
treading quietly down the hallway.

Then—
a warm smell drifted through the air.

Miso soup.

(…What?)

He stopped in his tracks.
Glancing toward the kitchen,
he saw the silhouette of his mother through the rising steam.

A light-colored apron.
Stirring a pot over the stove.

(…Mom…!?)

His heart leapt.
His eyes blurred with tears.

Was it a hallucination?
He rubbed his eyes.

But no—
she was still there.

At the back of the kitchen,
his father sat reading the paper.
He cleared his throat and poured himself a cup of coffee.

The TV murmured in the background:
“Skies across Tokyo will be mostly sunny today…"

—The world was moving as if nothing had happened.

(…It’s really back.)

Kenichi’s throat tightened.

He had waited so long.
He had dreamed of this moment again and again.
He had despaired, thinking it could never return.

But now,
there it was.

Ordinary life.

“…”

He couldn’t speak.

But the words burst out before he realized:

“I’m home!!”

It came out louder than he intended.

His mother flinched, startled, and turned around.
His father looked up from the paper.

(…They heard me… right?)

Kenichi stared at their faces,
his heart pounding in his chest.
