The Digital Priestess — Episode 19: Choose Your Future
“…So this is it, huh.”
Yuto muttered to himself,
staring at his phone screen.
The app—Miko Weather.
That red torii gate
and tiny bell icon
gave off an eerie vibe.
(…Yeah, okay.
It is kinda creepy-looking.)
Kenichi had been acting so desperate
that Yuto ended up downloading it.
But to be honest,
part of him still thought
it was all a joke.
Late at night,
alone in his room,
Yuto opened the app
while lying in bed.
The screen faded to black.
Then slowly,
a torii gate floated into view.
Behind it appeared a shrine maiden in white robes.
She stared directly at him,
a faint smile on her lips.
(…Okay,
this is giving me horror game vibes.)
Just for a moment,
a chill ran down his spine.
Even though it was just a screen,
he felt like she was really looking at him.
Then, text appeared.
“Please choose your future.”
Yuto frowned, confused.
New text slowly emerged beneath it:
“Which future do you desire?”
Two options appeared on screen:
◯ Choose a better future
◯ Preserve the present
(…Is this some kind of game?)
There was no scroll function,
no menu.
Only those two choices.
Yet somehow,
the app felt like it was “testing” him.
Like his answer meant something.
(…Is this seriously all there is?)
Yuto raised an eyebrow and scoffed.
“—What a joke.”
With a flick of his thumb,
he swiped the app closed.
Even as the screen faded,
he couldn’t shake the feeling—
that the shrine maiden was still watching him.
(…That look…
gave me the creeps.)
He tossed his phone onto the floor by his bed
and closed his eyes.
Part of him still felt uneasy.
But he didn’t believe it—not really.
(Kenichi’s really wound up over this…
I’ll try to cheer him up tomorrow.)
With that thought,
Yuto let out a breath
and drifted off to sleep.
That night,
he had a dream.
He was walking alone
through what looked like a shrine,
a tunnel of torii gates
stretching endlessly forward.
But the torii weren’t red.
They were a dull, murky gray.
The world was silent.
No wind,
no sound—
only the clack of his footsteps
echoing as he walked.
Suddenly,
he felt something behind him.
He turned—
but no one was there.
And yet—
he knew he was being watched.
That gaze…
It was exactly the same
as the shrine maiden’s.
Yuto stood still,
an inexplicable fear
settling into his chest.
And then,
with nowhere else to go,
he kept walking—
deeper into the torii-covered path.
