The Digital Priestess — Episode 4: Whispers from the App
Ever since morning, I found myself fiddling with my phone more than usual.
No—more precisely, I kept glancing at that icon.
The little bell in the bottom-right corner of Miko Weather.
It didn’t belong. It had a strange presence, like it wasn’t part of the screen at all.
(Nothing’s going to happen… right?)
That’s what I told myself as I tapped the bell again and again.
But it never responded.
It just glowed softly, silently—like an unblinking eye that was always watching.
(Maybe yesterday was just a one-time thing… just some gimmick.)
I was about to close the app when the screen suddenly went black.
“What the—”
My heart jumped. For a second, I thought my phone had crashed.
But then, a faint, warm light began to flicker in the darkness.
It felt like candlelight… soft and unsteady in the void.
At the center of that glow stood a girl dressed in white.
A shrine maiden.
Her long hair veiled her face, and yet… she felt oddly familiar.
No—that’s impossible. I’d never seen her before.
Still, the air around me seemed to shift as she appeared.
“Would you like me… to gaze into your future?”
The voice didn’t come from the speaker.
It echoed gently inside my head.
(Is this… part of the app?)
My hand froze, phone still in my grip.
Then, half-jokingly, I replied:
“Alright… sure. Show me what you’ve got.”
The girl slowly raised her head.
Her eyes met mine—no, they pierced through the screen.
And then she smiled, just barely.
“Very well.”
In the next moment, the light consumed the screen.
And then… everything was back to normal.
Just the regular weather report.
(…That’s it?)
I stared at the screen, unsure of what had just happened.
But one thing stood out—the bell in the corner was glowing more brightly than before.
It even looked… bigger.
Sharper.
Like it was really watching me now.
(No one’s gonna believe me if I talk about this…)
I scratched my head, wondering if I’d just dreamed it.
Just then, a new notification popped up:
“Today’s weather: Sunny. Temperatures will be high, but your mood will be ‘Good Fortune.’”
That was it.
No forecast for rain or clouds—just a strange little message that read more like a fortune than a forecast.
(A weather report… or an omen?)
I hovered my finger over the bell again, wanting to see the maiden once more.
But she didn’t appear.
Instead, a single line of text faded into view at the bottom of the screen:
“Please feel free to call upon me… anytime.”
As if something had quietly begun—
Something I hadn’t meant to wake.
